Is being a vet tech considered a trade job?

I'm exploring different career paths and thinking about becoming a vet tech. Is this considered a trade job? How does the education or training for vet techs compare to other trade jobs?

A veterinary technician is often considered to be a job in the skilled trades because it requires specific training and skills. In many cases, being a vet tech requires attending a two-year program, often at a community college or technical school, which results in an Associate's degree in Veterinary Technology. This is quite similar to many skilled trades that require an Associate's degree or certification obtained through a vocational program.

Similar to other trade jobs, the training for vet techs is often quite hands-on and prepares you to start working immediately after graduation. Vet tech programs typically include coursework in animal health and physiology, veterinary pharmacology, animal behavior, and more, as well as clinically-focused courses in things like animal nursing, anesthesia, surgery, and radiology.

In terms of the hands-on training, it's common for students to complete internships or externships at vet practices, which not only gives them real-world experience, but also can potentially lead to a job after graduation. Additionally, you will likely need to pass a state and/or national certification exam to become a licensed or certified vet tech, similar to many trade jobs that require licensure or certification.

Comparatively, the timeline and investment to become a vet tech can vary greatly from other trade jobs. For instance, becoming an electrician or plumber often involves a longer term of apprenticeship, but might not incur the same educational costs as a vet tech program.

Remember that it's important to explore any career path thoroughly before deciding on one. Evaluate your interest in working with animals, your aptitude for science and medical procedures, your tolerance for potentially difficult situations (like sick or aggressive animals), and your comfort level with the course requirements, certification process, and job market in your area.
