What is a competitive PSAT score for a sophomore?

Hi, I'm currently a sophomore and I just received my PSAT score. I was wondering what's considered a competitive score at this level? Do colleges look at our sophomore PSAT scores or is it just preparation for the PSAT/NMSQT next year?

Hello! As a sophomore, taking the PSAT is primarily a way to gauge your strengths and weaknesses and prepare for the PSAT/NMSQT during your junior year. Colleges do not look at your sophomore PSAT scores when assessing your application, as they mainly focus on your SAT or ACT scores if required.

That being said, a competitive sophomore PSAT score would generally fall within the 75th percentile or higher. This means you're scoring better than 75% of other test-takers. For reference, a total score of around 1100-1120 or higher would put you in the 75th percentile. Keep in mind that the maximum possible score for the PSAT is 1520.

As you're still in your sophomore year, you have time to improve your test-taking skills and knowledge. Use your PSAT results to identify areas where you may need improvement and work on them before taking the PSAT/NMSQT in your junior year. With practice and good study habits, you should be on your way to scoring competitively next year!
