Creating a College Application Timeline

I'm attempting to create a comprehensive timeline for the college application process. What key deadlines should I keep in mind, and how can I make sure I don't miss anything critical?

Responding to your question entails discussing a general timeline from junior year through senior year.

Starting with Junior Year

- Spring: Begin researching colleges and organizing their requirements, deadlines, etc.

- Late Spring/Summer: Prepare for standardized tests if necessary. Schools still requiring these tests include Dartmouth, Harvard, Purdue, Brown, Yale, UT Austin, and Caltech. See if you qualify for fee waivers for low-income students.

- Summer: Visit colleges if possible and narrow down your list.

Then Senior Year

- August - October: Work on your college essays and ask for letters of recommendation. The Common App opens on August 1st.

- October - November: Submit your Early Decision/Early Action applications, if you choose to apply early. The UC application filing period is from October 1 to November 30.

- Fall: Complete the FAFSA (opens October 1) and any other financial aid paperwork.

- January: Regular Decision deadlines typically fall in early January.

- January - February: Finish up scholarship applications.

- April: Colleges will notify you of admissions decisions.

- May 1: Decision Day - you'll need to accept an offer of admission.

Some deadlines may vary depending on the college, the program you're applying to, or your personal circumstances, so it's critical to check the specific dates for each college you're considering. Additionally, if colleges are requiring standardized tests, remember to register for these tests well in advance of your application deadlines! For the SAT, remember that the registration deadline is typically about a month before the test date.

Having a checklist or a spreadsheet with all your deadlines will definitely be helpful in managing the logistics. An annual planner or digital calendar would also be valuable to remind you of impending deadlines.

For the revisions of your college essays and other writing tasks, do set aside ample time. Reviewing and refining your work will make a difference, and you don't want to be rushing through this!

Finally, take good care of yourself during this demanding process. Rest, nutrition, and breaks are equally important. Stay on course, and good luck!
