What's the Hampshire College application process like?

I'm curious about applying to Hampshire College. Can anyone share details on what their application process looks like? Are there any unique requirements?

Hampshire College offers a unique admissions process that focuses heavily on the applicant as an individual and their personal drive to learn. This college doesn't use numerical or data-driven methods to assess applicants, it rather employs a holistic approach.

First off, Hampshire College is test-blind, so they do not factor in standardized test scores like the SAT or ACT in their application process for domestic applicants.

The first main requirement is a reflective essay. You’re expected to answer one of their provided prompts and demonstrate that you can think critically and passionately about a topic. The aim is to explore not just your writing skills, but also your intellectual curiosity and how you approach learning.

Secondly, they request a School Report which includes transcripts from your current (and any previous) high schools attended. They also require a Counselor Recommendation, which typically comes from a high school guidance counselor or advisor who can speak to your academic and personal achievements.

Two Teacher Evaluations are required. The college prefers evaluations from teachers who have taught you in major academic disciplines such as English, history, math, science, or a foreign language during your last years of high school. The evaluations should address your intellectual engagement in class, your contribution to the class dynamic, and your potential for successful college study.

Like most colleges, Hampshire strongly encourages all applicants to interview, but it is not a requirement. The interview gives both the college and the applicant the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about each other. Interviews can be done in-person on Hampshire's campus or virtually.

Lastly, a creative supplement is optional but encouraged. You can submit an example of a project that you're proud of, such as an art portfolio, a film you've made, a song you've written, or an analysis of a book you've read.

I hope this gives you a clear snapshot of the Hampshire College application process. It's definitely designed to understand you deeply as a budding scholar and person, which fits perfectly with Hampshire’s learner-directed, project-based educational model.
