Majoring in Law?

Hey everyone, I've been really interested in law lately and was wondering if law is a major you can choose in college or is it something that comes later, like in grad school? Would love some clarification on this.

Hello! It's an excellent question to ask if you're interested in pursuing a law career. In the United States, law is not a major you can choose during your undergraduate years. Instead, you can obtain a Bachelor's degree in any field before applying to law school for a graduate-level Juris Doctor (JD) degree.

While studying for your undergraduate degree, there are some majors that may be especially helpful in preparing you for law school. Some popular choices include political science, history, English, philosophy, or even criminal justice (which is a little more niche, so might not be offered by every school, but is clearly relevant). Whatever you study, it's essential to maintain a strong academic record, as law schools place a lot of weight on your undergraduate transcript and LSAT scores when assessing your application.

Additionally, during your undergraduate years, you can participate in extracurricular activities related to law or public policy, such as debate club, mock trial, student government, or internships in legal settings to gain relevant experience.

Once you've completed your Bachelor's degree and taken the LSAT, you can apply to law schools for a JD program, which typically lasts three years. Upon obtaining your JD degree, you'll need to pass the bar exam to practice law in your chosen jurisdiction.

Remember, regardless of your major, the key is to develop strong critical thinking, analytical, and communication skills, which are vital for a successful law career. Good luck on your law journey!
