Columbia University Questions

Hey, I'm a high school junior interested in applying to Columbia. Can anyone share what factors they look for in applicants? Also, do they heavily weigh extracurriculars or is academics their main focus?

Hello! Columbia University, like many other top colleges, looks for applicants who excel in various aspects of their application. While academics are certainly a key factor, they also consider extracurricular involvement, along with other components of a holistic review process.

Columbia places a high emphasis on the rigor of your coursework and your performance in those courses (GPA, class rank, etc.). They'll be watching for any AP, IB, or Honors classes you've taken and how you've performed in them. A strong academic foundation is vital, but keep in mind that Columbia also uses an Academic Index (AI) during the admissions process, which considers your grades, test scores, and class rank.

As for extracurricular activities, Columbia appreciates students who have a spike, or a well-developed specialty in a specific area. This means that instead of being moderately engaged in many activities, they prefer applicants who have a significant impact or substantial achievement in a specific area, usually supported by Tier 1 or Tier 2 activities (as explained in the post guidelines). Remember that quality matters more than quantity when it comes to extracurriculars.

In addition to academics and extracurriculars, essays and letters of recommendation play a crucial role in the application process. Strong essays can distinguish you as an applicant and highlight your unique qualities, while letters of recommendation can provide valuable insight into your character and work ethic.

Lastly, applying Early Decision or Early Action may boost your chances of admission, as it shows the university that they are your top choice and they have better chances of having you enroll if they accept you.

In summary, while academics are a significant factor, it's important to have a well-rounded application that showcases your extracurricular achievements, essays, and recommendations to increase your chances of being admitted to Columbia. Good luck with your application!
