I've been wondering, can colleges see what other schools I'm applying to? Does it change their evaluation of my application or is it simply something they don't pay attention to?
Colleges cannot see the other schools you're applying to through the Common App, nor through any additional forms you may need to submit like the FAFSA or CSS Profile. When you submit an application, your grades, activities, essays, and so on (or financial information) are sent directly to that school, and additional applications are also sent individually. The other schools on your list, and any information you have entered in their applications, is only visible to you.
Sometimes, you may be asked in an interview where else you are applying, but your response is highly unlikely to impact how a school perceives your application. Schools are more interested in big-picture data about which institutions they might be competing with for applicants, not judging any individual student's college list.
Of course, each of your applications should be personalized to that particular institution, and demonstrate genuine interest in attending. Even though colleges can't see where else you're applying, admissions officers can tell when you view their school as just one of many comparable options.
If you're looking for tips on how to personalize your application, the "Why School?" supplemental essay, which many schools use, is a great starting point.
