What is the fastest way to get an MD degree?

Hello, future doc here! I want to become a medical doctor, but I'm wondering if there are more efficient ways to achieve this. Are there any accelerated MD programs or alternatives to the traditional route that I should consider? Thanks for the help!

Hello! If you're looking to become a medical doctor more efficiently, you may want to consider a few accelerated programs that combine undergraduate study with medical education.

1. BS/MD programs: These programs typically last 6-8 years and combine a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree with a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree. By joining one of these programs, you'll save time since you'll be able to bypass the traditional medical school application process. You can find a complete list of these programs on CollegeVine's blog: https://blog.collegevine.com/a-complete-list-of-all-bs-md-programs.

2. Early Assurance Programs (EAP): These programs allow sophomores or juniors in college to apply for early acceptance into medical school. If accepted, students typically continue their undergraduate studies as usual but can have peace of mind knowing they've secured a spot in medical school. Some examples include Georgetown University's EAP and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai's FlexMed program.

Keep in mind that these programs are usually highly competitive, and require strong academic performance in high school or college. Additionally, you should only pursue these options if you're absolutely certain that a career in medicine is your calling. Otherwise, you may find yourself committed to an intensely rigorous program that you're not passionate about.

Lastly, while these programs may save you some time, there's no way to significantly shorten the MD journey, as medical education and training requirements are rigorous and demanding. Plus, either way you'll still have to go on to complete residency and potentially a fellowship as well. So, regardless of the program, it's essential to focus on gaining a solid medical education and developing the necessary skills to become a competent and compassionate physician.

Good luck on your journey!
