Navigating Common App essay prompts?

I'm starting my college applications, and I'm a bit overwhelmed with the Common App essay prompts. Any advice or suggestions on how to choose the right one for me? Thanks, y'all!

It's completely normal to feel overwhelmed with the Common App essay prompts! Here are some steps to help you choose the right one for you:

1. Reflect on your experiences and passions: Think about your personal story, challenges you've faced, or the passions that define you. Consider how they've shaped your personality and values.

2. Brainstorm essay ideas: Jot down several potential essay topics for each prompt. Spend some time brainstorming and don't worry about polishing or perfecting your ideas just yet.

3. Evaluate your ideas: Take a closer look at your brainstormed essay topics. Ask yourself: Which topics allow me to showcase my unique qualities and experiences? Which topics help me demonstrate my growth, potential, and/or self-discovery?

4. Choose a flexible prompt: After evaluating your ideas, choose a prompt that allows you to best convey your personal story and showcase your strengths. Remember, you don't have to strictly adhere to the prompts; they're there to guide you. If you find that none of the prompts perfectly align with your story, you can choose the "Topic of Your Choice" option.

5. Write a rough draft and seek feedback: Write a draft of your essay and share it with trusted individuals like teachers, counselors, or friends. Ask for their constructive feedback on your essay's content, structure, and flow.

6. Revise and refine your essay: Based on the feedback you received, revise and refine your essay until you feel it best communicates your unique story and personal qualities.

For example, if you're passionate about community service and have faced and overcome a personal challenge, you might brainstorm essay topics for the prompts about learning from challenges or problem-solving. After evaluating your ideas, you might choose the prompt that best allows you to convey your story and growth.

Remember, the goal of the Common App essay is to provide an insight into who you are beyond your grades and test scores. Choose a prompt that allows you to authentically reveal an aspect of yourself that admissions officers might not otherwise see on your application. Good luck!
