NMSC Selection Index?

I'm preparing for the PSAT/NMSQT and I've heard it's tied to the National Merit Scholarship. What's the NMSC Selection Index, and how does it impact the scholarship? Any tips on how to achieve a high score?

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) Selection Index is a score used to determine eligibility for the National Merit Scholarship Program. It's calculated based on your PSAT/NMSQT scores in three sections: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (ERW), and Math.

To calculate your NMSC Selection Index, you add your ERW score and double the Math score, then multiply by two. For example, if you score a 32 in ERW and a 34 in Math, your Selection Index would be (32 + 342) 2 = 200. The maximum Selection Index is 228.

Each year, the NMSC sets cut-off scores for each state, which vary due to the varying degree of competition in each location. If your Selection Index is equal to or higher than the cut-off score for your state, you'll be recognized as a Semifinalist. Semifinalists then have the opportunity to move on to the Finalist stage by submitting an application, which includes their high school transcripts, a personal essay, and information about their extracurricular activities.
