UMass Amherst vs Penn State: Help with Decision!

Hey all, I'm having a tough time choosing between the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Pennsylvania State University. I'm interested in majoring in engineering, but I'm not sure which specific field yet. Can anyone give me some input on the engineering programs and campus life at both schools?

Certainly! Both UMass Amherst and Penn State have strong engineering programs, but there are some differences to consider.

In terms of academics, Penn State's engineering school is generally considered slightly more prestigious and higher ranked than UMass Amherst, particularly in fields like aerospace, civil, and mechanical engineering. However, UMass Amherst also has a solid engineering program, especially in chemical engineering. In both schools, you'll find research opportunities, internships, and project-based experiences. Ultimately, you'll receive a solid education in engineering at either school.

When it comes to campus life, the two universities differ somewhat. UMass Amherst is located in a smaller, more liberal college town, with a close-knit community and many outdoor activities available nearby. The town of Amherst is also part of the Five College Consortium, which means you'll have access to classes and resources at nearby colleges such as Smith, Mount Holyoke, Amherst College, and Hampshire.

Penn State, on the other hand, is located in State College, which is known for its spirited college atmosphere and strong sports culture, particularly in football. With a larger student population than UMass Amherst, the campus features a vibrant social scene, with many clubs, societies, and Greek life available. Another point to consider is the weather: Pennsylvania tends to have milder winters compared to Massachusetts.

In sum, both universities offer reputable engineering programs, so it really comes down to your personal preferences in terms of campus life and environmental factors. To decide which university is the best fit for you, try visiting the campuses or talking to current students to get a feel for the atmosphere and culture at each school. Good luck with your decision!
