Economics BA—What is it like?

I'm considering majoring in economics and I see that many colleges offer a BA in economics. What does getting a BA in economics entail? Is it more focused on math or more on social science aspects?

A BA in Economics is an interdisciplinary undergraduate degree that covers both mathematical and social science aspects of the field. The degree usually takes around four years to complete and is designed to provide students with a solid understanding of economic concepts, principles, and their applications.

In a typical BA in Economics program, you can expect to take a combination of core and elective courses that cover a variety of topics. Core courses usually include microeconomics, macroeconomics, and introductory econometrics (which is a blend of economics and statistics). These core courses will give you a strong foundation in economic theory and analysis.

As you progress through the program, you'll have the opportunity to choose elective courses that align with your interests. These electives can range from more math-heavy subjects like advanced econometrics, game theory, and mathematical economics, to more social-science-oriented topics like behavioral economics, development economics, and international trade.

A BA in Economics typically has a balanced blend of math and social sciences, with a stronger emphasis on the latter. The focus on social science aspects allows you to explore how economic principles apply to real-world situations and analyze the impact of policies and decisions on individuals, communities, and countries.

Since the BA degree tends to be more flexible than a BS, you also have the opportunity to explore related subjects like political science, sociology, and history, which can provide valuable context to your understanding of economics. Consequently, a BA in Economics is well-suited for students who enjoy both quantitative analysis and exploring broader social and policy implications of economic decisions.

Keep in mind that the balance between math and social science may vary between programs, so it's essential to research each college's course offerings to find one that aligns with your interests and aspirations. Overall, an Economics BA is a versatile degree that can lead to various career paths such as finance, consulting, public policy, and research, among others.
