SMU vs LSU: Looking for some help!

I'm torn between Southern Methodist University and Louisiana State University. Do any current/former students have any thoughts on the differences in terms of academics, students, campus atmosphere, and extracurriculars? Also, how do these schools compare in terms of post-graduation job placement and networking? Thanks!

As a college admissions enthusiast, I can definitely provide you with some insights on the differences between SMU and LSU. Both are great choices, but they have their own distinct qualities.

Academics: The academic experience might differ depending on what you want to study. SMU is generally known for its strong business, arts and communications programs. On the other hand, LSU is recognized for their engineering, agriculture, and veterinary medicine. Additionally, SMU is a private institution with smaller class sizes, while LSU, being a public university, may have larger class sizes.

Students: In terms of student diversity, SMU has a smaller student population, with around 6,000 undergraduates, while LSU has a larger undergraduate body, with around 25,000 students. So if you prefer the intimacy of smaller classes and a tightly knit community, SMU might be a better fit. Meanwhile, if you prefer to meet a wider variety of people, LSU could be for you.

Campus Atmosphere: Both campuses have their own unique atmospheres. SMU is located in Dallas, a big city with many opportunities for internships and jobs while still having a very walkable and safe campus. LSU is in Baton Rouge, which has a more collegiate and southern vibe. LSU is also known for its strong traditions and sports culture, particularly football. Ultimately, it depends on your preference for city life versus a more college-town feel.

Extracurriculars: While SMU and LSU both offer a variety of extracurriculars, the student involvement culture could differ. You might find a more inclusive and vibrant Greek life scene at LSU, while SMU has a strong focus on community service opportunities. No matter which school you choose, you'll have ample opportunities to be involved in clubs, sports, and other on-campus activities.

Post-graduation Job Placement and Networking: Both schools have strong alumni networks, important connections, and career resources to support post-graduation plans. SMU's location in Dallas offers a unique advantage with more opportunities for internships and job placements for students. However, LSU also has a strong alumni presence, especially in the southern region of the US. Your chosen major and how you take advantage of networking opportunities would be significant factors in determining your future job placement.

In summary, both SMU and LSU have their own appealing qualities, and the best choice will depend on factors such as your preferred field of study, campus atmosphere, and the size and diversity of the student body. I'd recommend visiting both campuses, if possible, to get a feel for each campus and visiting their respective websites for more information. Good luck with your decision!
