USC theatre program admissions?

Hey folks! I've been really into theatre lately and am looking into the theatre program at USC. Does anyone know their acceptance rate, audition process, and any tips on maximizing my chances? Thanks a bunch!

Hello! USC's School of Dramatic Arts has a phenomenal theatre program, and it's great that you're considering it! While exact acceptance rates for the program can be difficult to find, USC as a whole has an acceptance rate of around 13%. The theatre program is known to be competitive as well.

Regarding the audition process, there are two primary components to applying for the BFA in Acting program:

1. USC's Common Application: This includes your general application to the university, with your academic and extracurricular records.

2. An audition: You will need to prepare an audition with two contrasting monologues. One should be from a contemporary play (post-1900), and the other from a classical piece (preferably a Shakespearean work). Each monologue should be under two minutes but showcase your ability to engage with a range of emotions and connect with the material.

In addition to the BFA in Acting program, USC also offers a BA in Theatre, which does not require an audition for admission. However, the BA is more focused on the broader aspects of theatre, so if you're specifically interested in acting, the BFA is the better choice.

To maximize your chances in the theatre program, focus on these key areas:

1. Monologue selection: Choose pieces that not only contrast in style but that also showcase your versatility as an actor. Make sure you genuinely enjoy the pieces and can connect with the characters emotionally.

2. Preparation: Practice your monologues in front of family and friends or even a private acting coach. Rehearse in different spaces, ensuring you can project your voice in various environments.

3. Research: Understand as much as possible about USC's School of Dramatic Arts. Investigate their core values, faculty members, performance opportunities, and other resources. This knowledge can help you tailor your application to express genuine interest in the program.

4. Extracurricular involvement: Immerse yourself in high school theatre productions and participate in workshops, community theatre, or other arts-related activities that allow you to hone your craft and demonstrate your commitment to the theatre.

5. Personal statement: Use your personal statement to tell a compelling story about your passion for theatre. Discuss your experiences, growth, and future aspirations in the field.

Remember that USC focuses on holistic admissions, so maintaining strong academics and extracurricular involvement outside the theatre will also be essential. Good luck on your journey into the exciting world of theatre and in the application process!
