NMSC Requirements

Hey guys! I'm trying to get a better understanding of the National Merit Scholarship requirements. Can anyone explain what I need to achieve in order to qualify for this scholarship? Is there a specific score I should aim for on the PSAT? Thanks for any help!

Hey there! To qualify for the National Merit Scholarship, you'll need to meet certain requirements based on your PSAT/NMSQT scores and other criteria. Here's a breakdown of the process:

1. Take the PSAT/NMSQT: In order to be considered for the National Merit Scholarship, you'll need to take the PSAT/NMSQT during your junior year of high school. This exam serves as both a practice SAT and the first step in qualifying for the scholarship.

2. Earn a qualifying score: The minimum qualifying score for the National Merit Scholarship varies by state, as each state has its own cutoff. Generally, you should aim for a score in the top 1% of test-takers in your state, which typically ranges from around 1390 to 1520. However, the exact score can vary year to year and may be slightly higher or lower.

3. Meet the additional eligibility requirements: In addition to earning a high PSAT/NMSQT score, you must also meet a few other conditions to qualify for the scholarship, such as:

- Be a high school student planning to enroll in college no later than the fall following completion of high school.

- Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. lawful permanent resident, or meet other specific eligibility criteria.

- Have a strong academic record throughout high school, especially in relation to college preparatory course work.

- Be recommended by a school official, usually your high school principal or counselor.

Once you meet these requirements and become a National Merit Semifinalist, you'll need to complete an application to advance to the Finalist level. The application includes information about your academic record, extracurricular activities, leadership experience, employment, and an essay. Additionally, you'll need to take the SAT or ACT and have the scores sent directly to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) to confirm your PSAT performance.

The NMSC selects about 15,000 Finalists, and from those Finalists, about 7,500 students are awarded National Merit Scholarships. There are various types of scholarships available, including corporate-sponsored scholarships, college-sponsored scholarships, and National Merit $2,500 scholarships.

Best of luck! Aim for a top PSAT score in your state and continue to excel in your academics to increase your chances of qualifying for the National Merit Scholarship.
