Letter of recommendation requirements?

I'm starting to think about who I should ask for my letters of recommendation for my college apps. Does anyone know if there are any specific requirements or suggestions for who to ask or how many we should request? Super nervous and would appreciate any guidance!

Don't worry! Asking for letters of recommendation is a normal part of the college application process, and as long as you're thoughtful about who you ask, they can really boost your application.

Typically, colleges will require two teacher recommendations and one counselor recommendation. However, make sure to check each college's specific requirements on their admissions website, as some schools may have different expectations.

Here are a few tips when choosing teachers to write your recommendations:

1. Choose teachers who know you well: It's best to ask teachers with whom you've developed a strong rapport and can provide unique insights into your academic performance, work ethic, and character. This usually means teachers from your junior or senior year, as they have seen your more recent work and growth.

2. Different subjects: If possible, aim to have recommendations from teachers in different subject areas (e.g., one humanities teacher and one STEM teacher). This can show your versatility and aptitude across a range of subjects.

3. Check for specific requirements: Some colleges or programs may require recommendations from teachers in specific subject areas or who teach classes that align with your intended major. Make sure to research each college's requirements before asking your teachers.

4. Extra recommendations: Generally, you should not submit more than the required number of recommendations, as it can overwhelm the admissions committee with information. If, however, you have a unique reason to submit an extra letter (e.g., a coach, club advisor, or research mentor who can speak to a different aspect of your abilities or interests), you can consider submitting an additional recommendation. Check with the individual college to see if they will accept extra letters and under what circumstances.

As for your counselor recommendation, this will usually come from your assigned high school counselor. Counselor recommendations provide context on your academic performance in relation to your school environment and can attest to your involvement in school-related activities.

Lastly, make sure to give your recommenders ample time (at least a month before deadline) to write your letters and provide them with relevant information (e.g., resume, transcript, personal statement) to ensure they can write a strong and personalized recommendation.

Best of luck with your college applications!
