What does the typical class profile look like for Columbia?

Hi everyone! I'm a high school junior and I've become increasingly interested in applying to Columbia. I think I would be a good fit there, but I'm curious—what does the typical class profile at Columbia look like? Think along the lines of: how many students are in each incoming class, what's the demographic makeup, and what fields of study are popular there?

Hi there! Columbia is indeed a great institution, and it's good to see you're interested in learning more about the University. Here's a general idea of the class profile for Columbia.

Incoming class size: Columbia College and the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) together, which make up the undergraduate population at Columbia University, have an incoming class size of around 1,400 students per year.

Demographic makeup: Columbia University is known for its diverse student body. In the most recent class, approximately 30% of students are Asian American or Pacific Islander, 20% are Black/African American, 22% are Hispanic/Latinx, and 50% are white. The percentages adding up to over 100% reflects students indicting more than one race/ethnicity.

International students make up around 17% of the incoming class, representing over 86 different countries. As for gender distribution, it's fairly balanced, with the recent class having a 48% male, 50% female, and 2% non-binary student ratio.

Popular fields of study: Columbia offers a wide range of academic programs. Some popular fields of study include economics, political science, computer science, English, and neuroscience. Engineering is also quite popular, especially in the SEAS, where majors like computer engineering and biomedical engineering attract a significant number of students. Keep in mind that given the University's core curriculum requirement, you will have a well-rounded education regardless of your major.

While it's good to know what the typical class profile looks like, remember that each incoming class will have a unique mix of students, and Columbia values diverse perspectives and academic interests. It's important to focus on developing your own "spike" or area of passion and excel in that, as well as show demonstrated interest in the school during your application process. Good luck!
