Admissions to Cal Poly: different by major?

Hi everyone! I'm applying to Cal Poly soon and I've heard their admissions process is different for each major. Can anyone provide more insight on how the process varies? Thanks!

Hi there! You're right that the admissions process at Cal Poly can vary depending on the major you apply for. Cal Poly uses an admissions screening known as the Multi-Criteria Admissions (MCA) process.

The MCA scores you based on a combination of your GPA, test scores (though they are currently test-blind for admissions purposes), extracurricular activities, and work experience. For some majors, they also consider additional factors such as relevant coursework or skillsets related to the major you're applying to.

The process differs by major because various departments within the University look for specific criteria that are important for success in their respective programs. For example, the College of Engineering might place a heavier emphasis on your performance in math and science courses, while the College of Liberal Arts might focus more on your writing skills, course load in humanities subjects, or involvement in arts-related extracurriculars.

Furthermore, some majors at Cal Poly are more competitive than others because of the demand and limited spots available. This means that the MCA score required to be admitted into these majors might be higher.

To give yourself the best chance of admission, be mindful of the major-specific criteria and tailor your application accordingly. For more accurate information about specific majors, consider reaching out to the admissions office or departmental advisors at Cal Poly.

Lastly, Cal Poly does not typically allow incoming freshmen to apply as undeclared students. You will need to choose a major when applying. Changing majors once enrolled can sometimes be difficult and competitive, so be sure to choose a major that aligns with your interests and goals.

Good luck with your application!
