Should I take the SAT or the ACT?

Hi all, I'm a junior and I'm planning on taking either the SAT or ACT, but I'm not sure which one. I've heard that colleges don't really have a preference, but I want to make sure I choose the one that's best for me. How did you decide which test to take, and do you have any advice for me? Thanks!

Hello! It's great that you're starting to think about college admissions tests. You're right that most colleges don't have a preference between the SAT and ACT, so the best choice for you will depend on your strengths and personal preferences. I helped my own child decide which test to take by looking at the differences between the two tests and considering their individual strengths and weaknesses. The SAT focuses more on critical reading and evidence-based writing, while the ACT has a science section and tends to have more straightforward math questions. To help my child decide, we had them take a practice test for both the SAT and the ACT to see which one they felt more comfortable with and which one they scored higher on. Based on the results, they chose the test that best showcased their abilities. I'd recommend doing the same—take a practice test for both exams and see which one you feel more confident about. Good luck with your testing journey, and remember that preparation is key!
