Applying to Washington University in St. Louis

Hi everyone, I'm a high school junior, and I'm starting to work on my college applications. Washington University in St. Louis has caught my eye. Can anyone give me advice on what they look for in applicants? I'd love to hear from current students or alumni if possible!

Hello! Washington University in St. Louis (WashU) is a great school and has a holistic approach to admissions, meaning they consider several factors in their review process. Here are a few aspects that WashU tends to focus on:

1. Academic Performance: They value a strong academic foundation, so it's important to have good grades and take challenging courses (AP, IB, etc.) throughout high school. This also includes class rank if available at your high school.

2. Test Scores: Although currently, WashU is test-optional due to the pandemic, having a solid SAT or ACT score can still be beneficial if you choose to submit them. It's worth noting that if you're applying for a competitive program like the architecture or art school, submitting a portfolio can help showcase your unique skills and talent.

3. Extracurriculars: WashU appreciates applicants with a demonstrated passion for their interests. It can be helpful to have a mix of Tier 1 and 2 activities, as well as some Tier 3 and 4 activities to show depth in your extracurricular profile. They seek students who will be engaged both on and off-campus.

4. Essays: Your essays play an important role in helping the admissions committee understand your personality, values, and goals. For WashU, the supplemental essay prompt usually focuses on your specific interest in the university. Be sure to research their programs, clubs, and resources, and then connect them to your interests and aspirations. A well-written, authentic essay can make a lasting impression.

5. Recommendation Letters: WashU requires at least two recommendation letters from teachers in core subjects (English, math, science, social studies, or foreign languages). They value insight from individuals who can speak to your academic and personal strengths, so consider asking teachers who know you well and can provide specific examples of your accomplishments and growth.

6. Demonstrated Interest: WashU has been known to consider demonstrated interest in their admissions decisions. Attending events like webinars, info sessions, or campus tours can be helpful, as well as engaging with the admissions team via email. Applying Early Decision can also indicate a strong interest in the university.

7. Interview: While not required, an optional alumni interview can provide valuable insight into your experiences and personality. It can help you stand out and demonstrate your interest in the school.

Although I'm not a current student or alum, I hope this gives you a good idea of what WashU is looking for in applicants. Good luck with your applications!
