Should I apply for financial aid even if I don't think I'll qualify?

Hi everyone, I'm a junior and I've been researching financial aid for college. Should I still apply for financial aid even if I don't think I'll qualify? Is there any harm in applying? Thanks for any insights!

Hi there! I can understand your concern about applying for financial aid, especially if you're not sure whether you'll qualify. In my personal experience with my own child, I'd say it's definitely worth applying for financial aid regardless of your perceived eligibility. The worst that can happen is you don't qualify and you're in the same financial situation as before. On the other hand, you might be pleasantly surprised and receive some form of assistance. Keep in mind that financial aid comes in various forms like grants, scholarships, loans, and work-study programs, and eligibility criteria can differ. Some awards are need-based, while others are merit-based or based on specific factors such as your intended major or background. In any case, it doesn't hurt to apply. Plus, many colleges require the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) or the CSS Profile for merit-based scholarships as well. In short, go ahead and apply for financial aid. You never know what opportunities might become available to you! Best of luck with your college journey!
