What's a reasonable number of colleges to apply to?

As I'm putting together my list of potential colleges, I'm starting to think about how many schools I should actually apply to. Are there any recommended numbers, or does it mainly depend on the individual? I don't want to spread myself too thin, but I also want to make sure I have enough options.

It's important to strike a balance between applying to enough colleges to have options and not overwhelming yourself with too many applications. A general rule of thumb is to apply to 8-12 colleges, but it does depend on the individual and their specific circumstances.

Breaking it down further, your college list should include:

- 3-4 reach schools: These are colleges where your academic profile falls below the average for accepted students. While getting in might be a long shot, it's still worth applying if you're passionate about attending these schools.

- 3-4 match schools: These are colleges where your academic profile aligns closely with the average for accepted students. You have a reasonable chance of being admitted, but it's not guaranteed.

- 2-3 safety schools: These are colleges where your academic profile is above the average for accepted students, and you have a high likelihood of being admitted.

This approach ensures that you're targeting a range of colleges, giving yourself a good chance of getting accepted to at least one or more of your top choices. Remember to focus on the quality of your applications rather than the quantity. It's better to submit well-crafted applications to a smaller number of colleges than to rush through many applications with less effort and attention.

Take the time to truly research and understand the fit and culture of each school on your list. This will not only help you develop stronger application materials but will also ensure that you're applying to schools you would genuinely be happy attending. The right number of colleges for you might differ from your friends or classmates, so remember to focus on what makes sense for your individual situation and goals.
