Do Colleges Care About Unweighted GPA?

As I work on my college applications, I'm concerned about my unweighted GPA compared to my weighted GPA. Do colleges place more importance on the unweighted GPA or do they focus more on the weighted GPA when they look at applications?

College admissions offices generally consider both unweighted and weighted GPAs, but they typically place greater emphasis on unweighted GPA. The primary reason behind this is that unweighted GPAs (on a 4.0 scale) offer a more consistent and standardized way of comparing applicants from different high schools, since course weights and grading scales for weighted GPAs can vary significantly between schools.

However, this isn't to say that weighted GPA is disregarded. Colleges still recognize the extra effort and rigor that a higher weighted GPA demonstrates. Through examining your transcript, admissions officers can see whether you have challenged yourself with advanced courses (such as AP, IB, or Honors classes) and how well you have performed in those courses. This representation of academic rigor is also an important aspect of your application.

To sum it up, while unweighted GPA is given greater importance in the admissions process, colleges still consider weighted GPA to assess your course rigor and challenge level. It's best to maintain a strong unweighted GPA while also taking challenging courses, as a well-rounded transcript will strengthen your overall application.
