When to Apply for College?

Hey, I'm a junior and was wondering, how early can I start applying to colleges? I want to get a head start, but I'm not sure when the application season begins. Thoughts?

Hi there! It's fantastic that you're eager to get started on the college application process. The application season usually starts in the summer or early fall of your senior year. For most US colleges, the Common App and Coalition App typically open on August 1st, which is when you can start filling out the main sections of these applications.

Early Decision (ED) and Early Action (EA) application deadlines for many colleges are usually on November 1st or November 15th, while Regular Decision (RD) deadlines tend to be in early January. Be sure to double-check the actual deadlines for the specific colleges you're interested in applying to, as they may differ from these general timeframes - the UC schools, for example, don't offer ED or EA, and instead have a deadline of November 30th for all applicants.

Although application season begins in your senior year, there are numerous things you can do now to prepare. Some of these include:

1. Research colleges and make a list of schools you're interested in. Consider factors like location, size, academics, campus culture, and financial aid options.

2. Keep focusing on your academics and maintain a strong GPA. Grades and coursework rigor are critical factors in the admissions process.

3. Participate in extracurricular activities that you're genuinely passionate about. Colleges value depth and dedication in a few areas over involvement in a wide range of activities.

4. Prepare for standardized tests (if required or desired) and plan when you'll take them.

5. Explore summer programs, internships, or volunteer opportunities to further explore your interests. You can find some ideas of things to get involved in on CollegeVine's blog: https://blog.collegevine.com/category/extracurricular-activities/summer-activities/.

6. If possible, plan to visit college campuses to get a feel for what you like or dislike in terms of campus culture and environment.

7. Begin thinking about your college essay and brainstorm topics that are unique, engaging, and reveal something meaningful about you. CollegeVine's blog contains extensive guidance on how to tackle the personal statement, which you can find here: https://blog.collegevine.com/how-to-write-the-common-application-essays/. They also have other posts dedicated to particular schools' supplemental essay prompts.

Remember to stay organized, set a timeline for yourself, and break tasks into smaller, more manageable goals. Having a structured plan in place will help you tackle the college application process more effectively. Good luck!
