Is a 32 ACT score considered good?

I just got my ACT scores back and scored a 32. I'm curious if this is a good score for college admissions, and how competitive it might be for top schools. Any thoughts on whether I should retake the ACT or if this score is good enough?

A 32 ACT score is considered a strong score for college admissions, as it places you in the 74th percentile of test-takers, meaning you scored higher than 97% of students who took the ACT. This score generally makes you competitive for most colleges and universities, including some selective schools.

However, your competitiveness for top schools depends on the specific colleges you're targeting. For the most prestigious and selective colleges, such as Ivy League universities, a 32 ACT score may be slightly below the median scores of admitted students. Those top schools typically have median ACT scores in the 33-35 range. While a 32 is not a deal-breaker, you might consider retaking the test if you're aiming for the most selective schools and believe you can improve your score.

Keep in mind that test scores are just one part of your college application. Admissions committees also consider your GPA, the rigor of your coursework, extracurricular activities, recommendation letters, and essays. A strong overall application can compensate for an ACT score that's slightly below a college's median. However, if you feel that you can raise your score and have the time and resources to prepare for a retake, it could potentially enhance your chances at top schools.

Ultimately, the decision to retake the ACT depends on your college list, your other application components, and your confidence in improving your score. Regardless, a 32 ACT score is an impressive achievement and will make you a strong candidate for many schools.
