What are people's opinions on UVM as a public Ivy?

I recently heard about the term 'public Ivy' and I saw that UVM was included in the list. I'm curious if anyone here has any thoughts on UVM and its reputation, especially compared to some top private schools.

UVM, or the University of Vermont, has indeed been referred to as a "public Ivy" because of its strong academic programs and overall quality of education. However, while UVM is a great school, it is important to keep in mind that the term "public Ivy" does not imply equivalence with top private Ivy League schools. The term is often used more as a marketing tool to indicate high-quality public institutions.

That being said, UVM certainly has a range of strong academic programs, particularly in environmental and life sciences, as Burlington, Vermont provides an excellent setting for studying and researching in these areas. More broadly, the school is known for its commitment to sustainability and social justice, and for the beauty of the surrounding area, as well as the accessibility of numerous outdoor activities and the strong sense of community created by attending a more rural school without the distractions of a city.

Comparing UVM directly to top private schools can be a bit challenging, as each school has its own unique strengths and opportunities. Generally, private Ivy League and top-tier universities will have more research funding opportunities and a stronger overall reputation. They may also offer a larger network of alumni and connections in various industries. Nevertheless, UVM is an excellent choice for many students, especially those who excel in the school's specialized areas of study and want a quality education in a picturesque location.

When choosing a college, it's crucial to consider factors like academic and extracurricular offerings, location, campus culture, and financial aid opportunities. Remember that finding the right fit for you is more important than the prestige associated with a particular name or designation. Visiting the schools and reaching out to current students can help you gain a better understanding of what it would be like to study there and determine if UVM or another institution is a better match for your personal and academic goals.

Best of luck with your college search!
