Why do colleges send promotional letters?

Hi, I've been receiving a bunch of letters from colleges lately. Are they sending these promotional materials to every student? Or do they actually have an interest in me applying to their school?

Hi there! College promotional materials serve multiple purposes. Firstly, they help colleges reach out to a wider audience and spread awareness about their programs and offerings. Secondly, these materials could indicate that the college has some level of interest, but it doesn't necessarily mean they have evaluated your entire academic profile.

Colleges often get students' contact information through the PSAT, SAT, ACT, and other similar sources. When you take these exams, you have the option to participate in Student Search Service (for College Board exams) or the ACT Educational Opportunity Service (EOS), which allow colleges to send you information based on your scores, among other criteria.

So while these promotional materials may indicate that you fit into a certain demographic or academic range that the college is interested in, it doesn't guarantee any significant advantage in the admissions process. It's essential to focus on building a strong application with solid academics, extracurriculars, and essays, as these factors will ultimately hold more weight with college admissions committees.

In short, receiving promotional materials is pretty common, and it's not a definitive indicator of your chances at the school. Focus on crafting the best possible application and consider promotional materials as a way to discover new options and gather information about various colleges. Good luck!
