Early Action Deferral

Hey! I applied to my dream college through early action, but I was deferred. Can someone explain what that means? Will I be considered during regular decision now or is there something else I need to do?

Hey there! A deferral means that the admissions committee has decided to move your application from the Early Action pool to the Regular Decision pool. Essentially, they want more time to review your application and compare it to the larger pool of applicants.

Don't worry — being deferred does not mean that you've been denied admission. Your application will now be evaluated alongside the other Regular Decision applicants. You don't need to take any particular action, but there are some things you can do to improve your chances during this time.

1. Send any updates to your application: If you've had any significant accomplishments since you submitted your application, such as awards or extracurricular achievements, you can send an update to the college. This will help show the admissions committee that you're still engaged and proactive in your pursuits.

2. Write a Letter of Continued Interest (LOCI): A LOCI is a letter you send to the college expressing your continued interest in attending the school. In the letter, you can include the updates mentioned earlier, and reiterate why you feel the school is a good fit for you. Admissions officers appreciate a genuine manifestation of enthusiasm for their institution.

3. Keep up your grades: Since colleges may request your mid-year report, it's essential to maintain strong academic performance throughout your senior year.

4. Stay involved in extracurriculars: Continue showing commitment to your activities, as colleges want to see that you're consistently engaged outside of the classroom.

Remember, a deferral is not a rejection. You still have a chance to be admitted during the Regular Decision round. Stay positive, and keep working hard to put your best foot forward. Good luck!
