ACT Scoring - Total Points?

Hey guys, I'm taking the ACT soon, and I'm wondering how many points it's out of? Is there like a maximum score you can get, and how is the scoring breakdown for each section?

Hi there! The ACT consists of four sections: English, Math, Reading, and Science. Each section has its own individual score ranging from 1 to 36.

Once you complete the test, your scores for each of the four sections will be averaged to get a composite score, which will also range from 1 to 36. This composite score is often what most colleges look at when reviewing your application. So, the maximum score you can achieve on the ACT is a 36.

In addition to the composite score, you may also receive subscores within each section, which can help you understand your strengths and weaknesses in specific areas. For example, in the English section, you might receive subscores for Usage/Mechanics and Rhetorical Skills. These subscores usually range from 1 to 18, and while they can provide valuable insights for self-improvement, most colleges will primarily focus on your composite score for admissions decisions.

If you choose to take the optional Writing portion of the ACT, your essay will be scored on a separate scale, with a score range of 2 to 12. This score is not included in your composite score, but some colleges may still consider your Writing score in their admissions process. Make sure to research the requirements of the colleges you're applying to.

Good luck with your ACT preparation!
