Understanding ACT test scores

Hey everyone! I just got my ACT scores back, and I need some help interpreting them. Can someone explain what each section score means and how the composite score is calculated? Are there any resources for understanding how these scores might be viewed by colleges?

Hello! Congrats on completing the ACT! I'd be happy to help you understand your scores.

The ACT consists of four sections: English, Math, Reading, and Science. Each section is scored on a scale of 1 to 36. Your raw score for each section (correct answers) is converted to a scaled score, which is the 1-36 score you see on your report.

To calculate your composite score, the scaled scores of all four sections are added together and then divided by four, rounding to the nearest whole number. Essentially, your composite score is the average of your four section scores.

When it comes to understanding how colleges view these scores, many institutions publish their middle 50% ACT score ranges for admitted students. This means that 25% of admitted students scored below the lower boundary, and 25% scored above the upper boundary. You can find this information on the college's admissions website or on sites like CollegeVine, which offer college admissions statistics as a resource. Comparing your scores to the middle 50% will give you an idea of how competitive your scores are for a specific school.

Keep in mind that most colleges view standardized test scores as just one part of your overall application. They also consider factors like your GPA, course rigor, extracurricular activities, essays, and recommendation letters. While a strong ACT score can boost your application, a below-average score doesn't necessarily mean you won't be admitted if other aspects of your profile are impressive.

Regarding resources, you can check out CollegeVine and ACT.org for more information on understanding your scores and how they are viewed by colleges. Remember to review each school's admission requirements as well when determining competitiveness.

Good luck with the college application process!
