Do colleges prefer weighted or unweighted GPAs?

Hey all, I'm a high school junior, and I was wondering if colleges prefer weighted or unweighted GPAs. My school calculates both, but I'm not sure which one I should focus on when applying to colleges. Any advice would be appreciated!

Hi there! It's great to see that you're already thinking about your college applications. When it comes to weighted vs. unweighted GPAs, colleges usually consider both. However, they might have a slight preference for weighted GPAs as they provide a more accurate reflection of the difficulty of your courses. If you've been taking more challenging courses like AP or honors classes, a weighted GPA will show that you've put in the effort to challenge yourself academically. On the other hand, an unweighted GPA is a more straightforward comparison, as it does not take into account the difficulty of the classes you've taken. In general, it's always a good idea to focus on getting good grades in challenging courses, as this will reflect well on both your weighted and unweighted GPAs. Keep in mind that colleges also look at other factors like your extracurricular activities, letters of recommendation, and personal essays. So, while your GPA is important, it's not the only factor that will determine your admission chances. Wishing you the best of luck with your college applications!
