Film Schools in Maryland?

Hey all, I'm interested in pursuing a film major and would like to stay in Maryland. Are there any good film schools or programs in the state that I should look into? Any advice is appreciated!

Hi there! Maryland has some solid options for film programs. Two film schools in the state that you may want to investigate are the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) and Towson University.

UMBC offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree in Cinematic Arts. This program allows students to learn various aspects of filmmaking, including screenwriting, directing, cinematography, and editing. Students will gain hands-on experience with state-of-the-art equipment and software, as well as have access to internship opportunities and UMBC's digital film lab.

Towson University offers a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Electronic Media and Film. With a strong focus on practical skills and hands-on experience, the program teaches students about narrative and documentary filmmaking, screenwriting, and film theory. Towson's facilities feature industry-standard equipment, and students can also take advantage of university partnerships with local media outlets for internship opportunities.

Both of these programs can provide you with the foundational knowledge and practical skills needed to excel in the film industry. When deciding between them, consider factors such as your preferred learning style, desired major focus (e.g. hands-on vs. theoretical), campus resources, and opportunities for networking and internships.

It's also important to visit both campuses and get a sense of the community and culture at each school. You can reach out to current students or recent graduates to hear about their experiences, as well as attend open house events or take a campus tour.

Good luck as you navigate the path toward studying film in Maryland!
