Is it better to take a lighter course load and get higher grades or challenge myself with harder classes?

Hi everyone! I'm a high school junior, and I'm trying to decide on my course load for senior year. Is it better to take a lighter course load and get higher grades, or should I challenge myself with harder classes and risk getting lower grades? Thanks for any advice!

Hey there! It's great that you're being proactive about planning your senior year. To answer your question, it depends on your goals and the colleges you're targeting. If you're aiming for competitive colleges, they generally appreciate students who challenge themselves with rigorous courses, such as AP or IB classes. This shows them that you're willing to push yourself and can handle a demanding college environment. However, if the more challenging courses will significantly hurt your GPA, you may want to strike a balance between the two. Maintaining a solid GPA is still important, especially if you're competing for scholarships or aiming for a specific percentile within your potential college's average accepted GPA range. It's all about finding the right balance for you. My child faced a similar dilemma, and they opted for a mix of challenging courses and less demanding ones so that they could manage their overall workload and still maintain a strong GPA. Ultimately, you know yourself best. Consider your personal strengths, weaknesses, and how much you can handle without getting too overwhelmed. Don't forget to factor in extracurricular activities, as they're important for college applications too. Good luck with your decision, and I hope you have a fantastic senior year!
