Hey everyone, I'm a high school junior interested in engineering. I've been looking into Claremont McKenna College, but I'm having trouble finding info about their engineering program. Does Claremont McKenna offer an engineering major, or do students have to take it as a dual degree with another school? Thanks for the help!
Hello! Claremont McKenna College (CMC) does not have a standalone engineering major. However, as a part of the Claremont Colleges consortium, CMC students have the opportunity to take advantage of resources available at the other member institutions, including engineering courses.
Specifically, Harvey Mudd College, another member of the Claremont Colleges consortium, is known for its strong engineering programs. CMC students can take classes at Harvey Mudd, and it's fairly common for students to do so. That being said, taking engineering classes at Harvey Mudd won't result in an engineering degree from Claremont McKenna.
Additionally, CMC offers a 3-2 engineering program, where students spend three years studying at Claremont McKenna and two years studying at an affiliated engineering school. At the end of the program, the student will receive two bachelor's degrees--one from CMC (in the chosen major at CMC) and one in engineering from the affiliated engineering school. Current affiliated schools include Columbia University, Harvey Mudd College, University of Southern California, and Washington University in St. Louis.
Keep in mind the 3-2 engineering program might not be the best fit for everyone, as it requires five years of study and may involve transferring to another school for the last two years. However, it's an excellent option for CMC students who are passionate about engineering and want to earn an engineering degree. Good luck with your college search!
