Yeshiva University App - What to expect?

Anyone who's gone through the YU application process, I could use some advice! What should I expect? What do they look for in applicants? Any tips for making my application stand out would be awesome!

In applying to Yeshiva University, here's what you can expect and some tips to make your application stand out:

1. Application Components: Like most universities, Yeshiva University requires the following components: their own Yeshiva Application (Yeshiva is not on the Common App), an official high school transcript, a list of your extracurricular activities, a letter of recommendation, a personal essay, and responses to several supplemental short answer prompts. Standardized test scores are optional, but will be considered if submitted. Yeshiva also requires an interview - you can schedule one online, on their admissions site.

2. Academics: Yeshiva University values strong academic performance, so make sure your transcript reflects a solid academic track record. If your high school offers AP or honors courses, try to take and perform well in those classes.

3. Essays: The personal essay is an opportunity to show the admissions committee who you are beyond your numbers. Share a unique story or perspective, which highlights your personality, values, and goals. Avoid cliché topics and focus on showcasing your passion, intellectual curiosity, and personal growth. Use the short answer questions as an opportunity to flesh out more niche sides of your personality that aren't already reflected elsewhere, including in your personal statement.

4. Extracurriculars: Yeshiva University values students who are involved in various extracurricular activities, which demonstrate leadership, commitment, and passion. Highlight experiences that show your dedication to your community, whether through religious organizations, volunteer work, clubs, or sports. Remember, quality over quantity is essential here.

5. Judaic focus: As a Jewish institution, Yeshiva University is interested in applicants who have demonstrated engagement with Jewish learning, religious practice, and community service. If your personal and extracurricular experiences reflect involvement in Jewish life, make sure to emphasize that in your application.

6. Letter of recommendation: Choose a recommender who can speak to your character, intellectual abilities, and potential for success in college. They should be able to provide specific examples that highlight your strengths. Teachers from both general and Judaic studies can provide valuable insights into your academic and personal qualities, so weigh all your options before deciding who you want to write your letter for Yeshiva.

7. Interview: This is a chance to demonstrate your genuine interest in Yeshiva University, elaborate on the points you discuss in your personal statement and activities list, and share additional information that might not have been covered in your application. Research the university and its programs beforehand so you can ask informed questions and provide thoughtful answers.

8. Standardized test scores (optional): Although submitting standardized test scores is optional, strong scores can help boost your application. If you believe your test scores (SAT, ACT, etc.) reflect your academic abilities well, consider submitting them. You can read more about how to navigate test-optional policies on CollegeVine's blog: https://blog.collegevine.com/does-test-optional-mean-test-optional/.

In summary, to make your application to Yeshiva University stand out, focus on showcasing your academic, extracurricular, and personal strengths, as well as your dedication to Jewish values. View each piece of your application as an opportunity to demonstrate your interest in Yeshiva and what you can bring to their community. Good luck!
