Experiences with Computer Science at Dartmouth?

Hey all, I'm seriously considering applying to Dartmouth for a Computer Science major. Does anyone have any personal experiences or info about the program? I'm especially interested in the quality of the curriculum, opportunities for research/internships, and general campus life for CS majors.

I can provide some insights into the Computer Science program at Dartmouth! Dartmouth is known for having a high-quality curriculum that provides a strong foundation in computer science theory, as well as offering numerous opportunities for students to apply the knowledge they've gained. The program consists of a mix of required core courses, electives, and project-based courses that allow students to dive into specific areas of interest like machine learning, artificial intelligence, or software engineering.

One aspect that sets Dartmouth's CS program apart is its focus on interdisciplinary collaboration. There are many opportunities for students to work on projects and conduct research across various disciplines, such as with the Digital Arts, Engineering, or even Business departments. This creates a well-rounded experience for students, as they can apply their computer science skills in various real-world contexts.

Dartmouth is also very supportive when it comes to research opportunities and internships. Many faculty members have their own research groups and actively involve undergraduates in their work. Students can engage in research through independent studies, supervised by faculty members, or participate in the Presidential Scholars Program, which fosters research collaboration between undergraduates and faculty from various departments. In terms of internships, the Center for Professional Development helps students find suitable placements related to their interests, and the strong alumni network is another resource for making connections and securing internships or job opportunities.

As for the campus life, Dartmouth is known for its tight-knit community, and computer science majors are no exception. The Computer Science Student Association (CSSA) is an active organization on campus that promotes collaboration among students, hosts events, and provides academic support. Additionally, Dartmouth's location in Hanover, New Hampshire provides a unique and picturesque setting with a strong sense of community, offering various outdoor activities and events throughout the year.

In summary, Dartmouth's Computer Science program provides a strong foundation in theory with numerous opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration, research, and internships. The tight-knit community creates a supportive atmosphere both within the program and on campus as a whole, making Dartmouth an excellent choice for pursuing a computer science degree.
