International Relations UC Davis

Hi guys! So, I'm really interested in majoring in International Relations and I've heard that UC Davis has a solid program. Can anyone currently in the program share their experiences and what they like or don't like about it?

Hello! I'm not currently in the UC Davis International Relations program, but I've spoken with students who are and can share some general insights. Many of them appreciate the interdisciplinary nature of the program, which encompasses history, political science, and economics, along with the flexibility it offers in terms of selecting coursework tailored to their specific interests. This allows students to explore a wide array of subjects such as human rights, international conflict resolution, and global political economy while gaining a thorough understanding of world issues.

Some positives students have mentioned include the opportunity to work with experienced and approachable faculty members, a supportive academic environment, and access to various extracurricular activities and clubs related to the field (like Model United Nations). UC Davis also offers study abroad programs, which can be an invaluable experience in deepening your understanding of international relations and different perspectives.

On the flip side, a few of the challenges that students have brought up include the large class sizes during introductory courses, making it difficult to build close relationships with professors early on. However, as you progress in the program, class sizes typically become smaller, offering chances for more personalized interaction. Some also feel that the program's interdisciplinary nature can be overwhelming, making it essential to be proactive about seeking advising and guidance.

Overall, it seems that UC Davis offers a well-rounded and comprehensive International Relations program that allows students to pursue various interests while gaining a deep understanding of complex global issues. Just make sure to be proactive in seeking guidance and building connections within the program to make the most out of your experience. Good luck!
