Housing at Southern Methodist University

Hi everyone! I got accepted to SMU and I'm curious about the housing situation on-campus. What are the dorms like for freshmen, and are there any specific residence halls you recommend or advise against?

Congratulations on your acceptance to SMU! As a freshman, you'll find that the housing options at SMU are designed to foster community and help you adjust to college life. The majority of freshmen live in Residential Commons (RCs), which are groups of students residing in the same building and sharing common interests, majors, or extracurricular activities. There are 11 RCs on campus, each with its own unique traits and traditions.

Some popular freshmen residence halls include Armstrong, Crum, and Ware Commons. These halls are known for being modern, clean, and having good amenities. Armstrong Commons, in particular, has a reputation for exceptional facilities and a tight-knit community. However, factors such as where your classes are located and your personal preferences can influence your decision as well.

As for residence halls to avoid, Boaz Hall was previously known for being less desirable due to its age and shared bathroom layouts. However, it has recently undergone some renovations, so it may be worth considering again.

All residence halls, regardless of their popularity, will provide you with opportunities to forge new friendships and participate in various activities within the RC community. So even if you don't get into your top choice, you'll still have a great freshman year experience.

Keep in mind that your housing preferences may change after your first year, and you can always explore alternative living situations, such as joining a fraternity or sorority or moving off-campus.

I recommend visiting the SMU website to explore each of the Residential Commons in-depth and gather more information on their amenities, events, and traditions. Additionally, if you have the opportunity to visit campus during future open houses or admitted student events, it's a great way to get a feel for each residence hall in person. Good luck, and enjoy your time at SMU!
