Safety Concerns Around Temple University

As a high school junior considering Temple, I've heard some concerns about crime around the campus. Can any current students share their thoughts on safety and what measures the university takes to keep students secure?

As someone familiar with Temple University, I can assure you that safety is a top priority for the administration, and the university has implemented several measures to ensure the well-being of its students. However, it's worth noting that the campus is located in an urban area, which can contribute to higher crime rates. Nonetheless, many students feel safe on and around campus due to the various measures in place.

First, Temple has its own police force on campus. The Temple University Police Department is the largest university police force in Philadelphia, providing 24/7 patrols and security services to the campus community. They also have a partnership with the Philadelphia Police Department to coordinate and share resources.

Second, there are emergency Blue Light Phones located throughout campus. These phones connect you directly to the police department if you ever feel endangered or need assistance. You can also request a walking escort service if you're walking alone and would like company for the walk.

Additionally, Temple provides the TUAlert system—a campus-wide notification system that alerts students and staff of urgent information related to safety concerns, extreme weather, or other emergencies—so you can stay informed and take appropriate action whenever needed.

Moreover, the university offers several transportation options, such as the Owl Loop (night bus service) and the Flight (shuttle service), to safely take you around campus and to certain off-campus locations during day and nighttime hours.

While Temple has taken these steps to keep students safe, it's essential to remain vigilant and exercise personal safety precautions. Avoid walking alone in unfamiliar areas late at night, stay aware of your surroundings, and watch your belongings, especially in public places.

All things considered, safety concerns shouldn't deter you from considering Temple University, as the campus provides a range of safety measures and resources to help ensure a secure environment for the student community. It's essential to visit the campus yourself and get a feel for the environment to make an informed decision about whether you would be comfortable attending the university.
