Theatre Schools in Virginia?

Hi everyone! So I'm a junior right now, and I've been thinking a lot about college. I'm really interested in pursuing theatre, and since I live in Virginia, I was wondering if there are any theatre schools or programs in Virginia that I should look into. Any suggestions or advice is much appreciated!

Hi there! Your interest in pursuing theatre is exciting, and Virginia has several schools and programs to consider.

1. Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU): VCU's School of the Arts offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Theatre with concentrations in performance, scenic design, costume design, lighting design, sound design, stage management, and technical production. VCU is well-regarded for its theatre program and offers opportunities for students to be involved in productions from their first year.

2. James Madison University (JMU): JMU offers both a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree and a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Theatre and Dance. Students can focus on theatre, musical theatre, or dance. JMU has a strong theatre department, and their annual season usually consists of several productions, allowing students to gain hands-on experience.

3. University of Virginia (UVA): UVA's Department of Drama offers a BA degree in Drama. Students can study acting, directing, design & technology, playwriting, or dramaturgy. While UVA might not be mainly known for theatre, their program is solid and encourages involvement in the university's theatre community.

4. George Mason University (GMU): GMU's School of Theater offers a BFA in Theater with concentrations in performance, design, technical production, and stage management. They also offer a BA in Theater, which allows students to explore theatre more broadly.

5. Christopher Newport University (CNU): CNU offers a BA in Theater with the option to concentrate in performance or design/technical theatre. Students have the opportunity to participate in the university's numerous productions throughout the year.

These are just a few of the theatre programs available in Virginia. When researching schools, consider factors such as available concentrations, performance opportunities, faculty experience, and facilities. Don't hesitate to reach out to professors or current students to get more information on the programs that interest you. Best of luck in your search!
