Does applying Early Decision really increase chances of admission?

Hi there! I'm a junior in high school, and I've been hearing a lot about the benefits of applying Early Decision. I was wondering if applying ED truly increases your chances of getting into a college. I have a dream school in mind, but I don't want to commit if it doesn't help my chances. Any advice?

Hi! It's great that you're thinking ahead about the college application process. As a parent who recently went through this with my child, I can understand the uncertainty you may be feeling. Applying Early Decision can indeed increase your chances of admission, but it's important to weigh the pros and cons before making a decision. Since ED is a binding agreement, you should only apply this way if you're absolutely certain that the college is your top choice and that you'll be able to afford it. Colleges often have higher acceptance rates for ED applicants, as it shows a strong commitment to the school and helps them with their yield (the percentage of accepted students who choose to enroll). This can make the applicant pool less competitive than during Regular Decision. However, keep in mind that the ED pool may also include many highly qualified candidates, so it's not a guarantee of admission. If you're unsure or have financial concerns, you might consider applying Early Action instead, which is non-binding and still allows you to demonstrate your interest in the school. Ultimately, the most important thing is to submit a strong application that showcases your talents and achievements. Best of luck!
