Thoughts on Florida State's History Department?

Hi, I've been looking into Florida State's history department and considering it as one of my top choices for college. Can anyone share their experience with the department? Professors, course variety, and internship opportunities? Thanks!

Florida State University's History Department is known for its diverse offerings and experienced faculty. I can definitely give you some information based on what many students have shared.

Course variety: FSU's History Department offers a wide range of classes covering different periods, regions, and themes. You'll find courses on U.S. history, European history, and non-Western history, as well as classes focusing on specific topics such as gender, race, and imperialism. With a variety of classes available each semester, you should be able to both explore your existing interests and discover new ones along the way.

Professors: Many students have reported positive experiences with the faculty. The professors are generally knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and approachable. They are often willing to not only assist students in their academic pursuits, but also provide guidance on research projects, internships, and other opportunities. Building relationships with your professors is extremely valuable for networking and seeking advice on potential career paths or graduate programs.

Internship opportunities: There are a number of history-related internship options available to FSU students, both on and off-campus. The department itself maintains connections with various local archives, museums, historical societies, and government agencies. They often share information about available internships and part-time work with students in the department. Additionally, FSU's Career Center can provide further support and resources in finding internships tailored to your interests and needs.

Finally, I encourage you to take part in FSU's History Club, a student organization that can connect you with like-minded peers and provide resources and networking opportunities. Studying abroad can also be a fantastic way of synthesizing your historical knowledge, by viewing the concepts you’ve been exploring through a different cultural lens. For example, the FSU London Study Center is located right near the British Museum, and thus provides a phenomenal opportunity for you to engage directly with some of the ideas you’ve studied back in Tallahassee.

Overall, Florida State's history department has much to offer, but keep in mind that individual experiences will differ. To get a better sense of what the department is like, consider emailing current students or professors and asking for their opinions, or even visiting campus (if possible), especially since you also want to be sure that FSU’s broader vibe as a school is a good match for you. Ultimately, you want to choose a school where you’ll thrive personally as well as academically. Best of luck with your college search!
