Experience with Anthropology at CSUF

Hello, I'm very interested in studying anthropology at Cal State Fullerton (CSUF). Could anyone share their experience or thoughts on the quality of the program? Are there many research opportunities for undergrads? Thanks in advance!

Hello! CSUF has a solid Anthropology program, and it's great that you're considering studying it there. At CSUF, the Anthropology program is part of the larger College of Humanities and Social Sciences, which aims to provide a strong foundation in anthropological theories and methods. This broad foundation will allow you to better understand human cultural and biological diversity from the past to the present.

As for research opportunities, CSUF does offer some undergraduate research experiences, but they may not be as extensive as the opportunities at more well-renowned research institutions. However, faculty members do engage in research and actively involve undergraduate students in their projects. There may be chances for you to work closely with professors who have research interests aligned with your own, which could lead to valuable mentorship and hands-on research experience.

Additionally, if you're interested in other forms of practical experience, CSUF encourages students to participate in internships and fieldwork that relate to their interests in anthropology. You could also go on a study abroad program, to acquire a more global perspective on anthropology, such as the Language & Culture program at Aix-Marseille Université in France. Many anthropology students find that studying abroad is one of the most valuable parts of their college experience.

I also would recommend checking out the CSUF Anthropology Student Association (ASA), a club that fosters student interest in the field and provides resources and support to its members. ASA frequently hosts events like guest speakers, workshops, and social gatherings, which can provide you with valuable networking opportunities.

Overall, studying anthropology at CSUF can provide you with a solid foundation in the discipline and access to research opportunities, internships, and fieldwork, although, with slightly more limited offerings than at some other institutions, you may need to be proactive in seeking out these experiences. Good luck!
