Hey guys, I'm really interested in studying engineering and I've been looking at Oberlin College. Does anyone know whether they offer an engineering program or not? And if they do, can you tell me a bit about it? Thanks in advance!
Oberlin College does not have a standalone engineering program. However, they do offer a 3-2 Engineering Program in collaboration with a few engineering institutions like Columbia University, Washington University in St. Louis, and Case Western Reserve University. In the 3-2 Engineering Program, you would spend three years at Oberlin College, pursuing a liberal arts education while completing required pre-engineering coursework. These courses include fundamental engineering prerequisites such as physics, mathematics, and chemistry. After successfully finishing the prerequisites and fulfilling Oberlin's academic criteria, you'd have the opportunity to apply to one of the affiliated engineering schools, where you would spend an additional two years completing your engineering degree.
Upon completion of the 3-2 Engineering Program, you would earn two bachelor's degrees – one from Oberlin College (usually in a major like Physics or Mathematics) and another from the engineering school where you complete the engineering coursework.
While the 3-2 program may seem rather unconventional compared to attending a college with an in-house engineering program, it does provide you with the opportunity to develop a well-rounded liberal arts education, along with acquiring a specialized engineering degree. This combination can help you stand out in your future engineering career, as you may have more extensive critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills developed from your liberal arts background. However, you should research more about the program to understand if it aligns with your goals, interests, and whether you're comfortable with the idea of switching schools after three years.
