Hey everyone, I'm a junior starting to look at colleges for next year. I have Johns Hopkins University on my list, but I'm not sure if my GPA would be competitive enough. Any idea what the average GPA is for accepted students at JHU? Thanks!
Hello! The average GPA for accepted students at Johns Hopkins University is stellar, typically around a 3.9 unweighted. And although JHU does not release an average weighted GPA, they certainly expect students to also be challenging themselves in AP, IB, and/or Honors courses, to demonstrate their readiness for the high level of academic rigor found at JHU.
However, keep in mind that your GPA is just one component of your application, and JHU evaluates applicants using a holistic approach. They'll also look at your test scores, extracurricular activities, essays, and letters of recommendation, among other factors. In other words, even a perfect 4.0 won't guarantee you acceptance alone.
On the flip side, even if your GPA is a little lower, don't rule out JHU completely. Create a well-rounded application that showcases your strengths, passions, and any potential "spikes" you might have that would help set you apart from even students with higher GPAs. That being said, your own GPA will still need to be excellent - there is some wiggle room, but you'll want to be in the 3.7 - 3.8 range at least.
To summarize, keep striving for high academic performance as you finish up your junior year and move into your senior year. At the same time, focus on other aspects of your application to create the most comprehensively compelling profile possible.
