Should I double space my college essay?

Hi everyone, I'm polishing up my college essay and I'm not sure if I should double space it or not. Is there a standard format colleges prefer? Thanks for any help!

Hi there! It's great that you're putting the finishing touches on your college essay. Formatting can indeed be an important aspect of your essay, as it helps make it easy to read and shows attention to detail.

Most colleges prefer essays to be double-spaced, with standard 1-inch margins and a 12-point font like Times New Roman or Arial. This is because double spacing makes the text more readable and leaves room for notes or comments from the admission officers. However, always check the specific application guidelines for each college, as they might have their own preferences.

When my child applied to college, we made sure to go through the application guidelines for each school and follow their formatting suggestions. It's always better to be on the safe side and adhere to the requirements of each institution. Good luck with your essay and the college application process!
