How good is a 27 on the ACT?

Hello! I got a 27 on my ACT and want to understand how competitive my score is. Can you guys give me some insight on whether this score is good for college applications or should I retake the test to improve it?

A 27 on the ACT is considered above average and places you in the 87th percentile of test-takers. This score can make you a competitive applicant at many colleges and universities. However, the competitiveness of your score also depends on the specific schools you're targeting and the range of their typical admitted students' test scores.

To determine whether a 27 on the ACT is good for your college applications, research the middle 50% ACT score range of admitted students for each school on your list. If your score falls within or above that range, you have a good chance of being considered. However, if your score is below this range and you believe you can improve, you may want to retake the test to become more competitive at these schools.

Additionally, keep in mind that while standardized test scores are an important aspect of your application, colleges also look at various other factors like your high school transcript, extracurricular activities, essays, and recommendation letters. So, even if you decide to keep your ACT score of 27, focusing on other components of your application can still make you a strong candidate.

If you do choose to retake the test, take advantage of available test prep resources, practice tests, and tutoring to help improve your score. Sometimes, just becoming more familiar with the test format and content can lead to improvement. Good luck!
