What's the PLU English Department like?

Hey y'all! I'm considering Pacific Lutheran University for my undergrad, and I'm really interested in English. Could anyone tell me more about their English department? Like, how are the professors, course offerings, and overall experience?

I've heard positive things about the PLU English Department. The department offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in English which allows students to choose between three concentrations: Literature, Creative Writing, and Professional, Public, and Digital Literacies. This flexibility is great for catering to students' specific interests and goals. Additionally, they offer a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Education, for students who wish to pursue teaching.

Many students have praised the professors for being passionate, knowledgeable, and approachable. Classes tend to be smaller in size, which allows for more personalized attention and engaging class discussions. Professors foster a nurturing environment where students feel comfortable sharing ideas and participating in discussions. They are available for consultation during office hours and often go the extra mile to support students in their academic and professional pursuits.

The English department offers a diverse array of courses, from traditional literature surveys to specialized topics like digital literature, film studies, and creative writing workshops. This wide range of course offerings ensures that students can explore various literary genres, periods, and styles to develop their critical reading, writing, and analytical skills.

Outside of the classroom, there are opportunities for students to get involved in extracurricular activities related to English. The English Club, open to all students regardless of their major, plans events and connects students with shared interests. Another option is The Matrix, PLU's annual literary journal, where students can submit their poetry and prose for publication, or join the editorial team to help produce the journal.

Overall, the PLU English Department offers a well-rounded experience with a supportive community of professors and students. The small class sizes, diverse course offerings, and involvement opportunities make the program an attractive choice for those interested in studying English at the undergraduate level.
