How's the music therapy program at Arizona State?

Hello everyone! I'm super interested in music therapy, and I came across the program at Arizona State University. Does anyone know if it's a good program overall? Any experiences or insights you can share would be super helpful! Thanks!

Hello! Arizona State University (ASU) has a strong Music Therapy program, which is accredited by the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA). The program is housed within the School of Music, Dance and Theatre, which is part of the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts. This placement allows students to benefit from exposure to a variety of music and arts disciplines, and strengthen their overall skill set as a result.

ASU's Music Therapy program offers both undergraduate (Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy) and graduate (Master of Music in Music Therapy) degrees. Students in the undergraduate program gain a comprehensive education that combines music, psychology, and health sciences. In addition to classroom instruction, students are required to complete 1,200 hours of clinical training, including a minimum of 180 hours of pre-internship clinical experiences and a six-month full-time internship. This hands-on experience ensures that students are well-prepared for their future careers as music therapists.

One of the program's standout features is its faculty, who bring a diverse background of professional experiences in music therapy. They are active researchers and clinicians, who are committed to ensuring students receive an education that remains grounded in real-world applications and current best practices.

Being located in the Phoenix metropolitan area also means more opportunities for internships and job placements after graduation. ASU music therapy students have access to a broad range of clinical settings in the region, including hospitals, schools, rehabilitation centers, and private practice.

As with any program, it's a good idea to visit the campus and speak with current students or faculty if possible. They can give you a better sense of the program's culture and help you decide if it's the right fit for your goals and interests, as well as whether ASU's overall vibe is a good fit for you personally. Good luck!
