National Merit Requirements?

Can someone explain the different requirements and levels of the National Merit program? I'm a bit confused about the distinctions between Commended, Semifinalists, and Finalists. Thanks for your help!

Sure, I'd be happy to clarify the distinctions between the different levels of the National Merit program!

First, the National Merit Scholarship Program is a competition for recognition and scholarships based on PSAT/NMSQT scores. Here's an outline of the different distinctions in the competition:

1. Commended Students: These students are recognized for their outstanding academic promise based on their PSAT/NMSQT scores. They score in the top 3-4% of all participants, but they don't continue in the competition for scholarships. While there is no scholarship specifically for Commended Students, being recognized as one can be seen as an achievement and boost your college application.

2. Semifinalists: Semifinalists are students who score in the top 1% of test-takers in their state. The exact score cutoff varies by state and changes slightly each year. Semifinalists are then invited to submit an application to continue in the competition for scholarships. In addition to their high PSAT/NMSQT performance, they must have a strong academic record and provide other information, such as their extracurricular achievements and a teacher recommendation. Around 90% of Semifinalists become Finalists.

3. Finalists: To be considered finalists, the Semifinalists that pass the rigorous assessment as mentioned above are chosen. Finalists are eligible for various scholarships through the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), as well as other scholarships provided by colleges and corporations. There are around 7,500 total scholarships awarded to Finalists, which accounts for about half of the Finalist pool.

In summary, Commended Students are recognized for their exceptional PSAT/NMSQT scores but do not continue in the competition. Semifinalists are in the top 1% of scorers and have the chance to advance to the Finalist level by submitting an application. Finally, Finalists are eligible for various scholarships provided by NMSC, colleges, and corporations.

I hope this helps to clarify the distinctions between the different levels of the National Merit program and the requirements for each!
